RRIO created

CB 117569 became Ordinance 124011, creating Seattle's rental registration and inspection program.

2016

Tenant protections and monitoring

CB 118678 became Ordinance 125054, which directs the SDCI Director to report annually to Council on rent increases at units with outstanding code violations. Committee discussion of recurring rental-market monitoring followed on Sept 21, 2016.

2017

Renters' Commission created

CB 118921 became Ordinance 125280, creating an advisory Renters' Commission. The same year CB 118974 became Ordinance 125343, rewriting RRIO reporting metrics. The first annual report under Ordinance 125054 came due June 15, 2017.

Council passes CB 121254

The rental junk-fee bill requires landlords to keep compliance records for three years and presumes a violation, rebuttable by clear and convincing evidence, where records are missing. Effective July 1, 2027.
